			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Interaction of nanoparticles with biological systems ranging from biomolecules to biological cells is of importance for a range of applications, such as high-resolution biomedical imaging,(1) gene sequencing for molecular diagnostics,(2) and sensitive electronic devices(3). In this report, we demonstrate that positively charged cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), which is a stabilizing agent used to synthesize different metal nanoshapes (4-7) (such as rods, spheres, cubes, prisms, stars, and hexagons), is an effective nanoparticle coating for self-assembling an electrically percolating monolayer of different nanoshapes on gram-positive bacterium, such as Bacillus cereus. The versatility of CTAB is especially realized for deposition of nanorods, where we observe four orders of magnitude larger conductivity compared to that of nanospheres at three times smaller area coverage. For the deposition on a &#8220;physical surface&#8221;, the rods do not form electrically percolating channels.(8) Formation of such a percolating-conducting network on bacterium is attributed to high adhesion that overcomes steric interaction (responsible for liquid-crystalline order (see Figure 1a)), leading to random orientation (see Figure 2a). Furthermore, the strong adhesion (evidenced by conformal deposition of a rod causing bending) lowers the contact resistance, leading to 104 increases in conductivity at 13.5% area coverage compared to spheres with 41% area coverage (see Figure 3). This high conductivity is achieved well below the percolation threshold for random structure at 45% area coverage in two dimensions.(9) With only 10% of bacterium surface covered, the microorganism may remain alive for a time longer than that for &gt;40% coverage systems with nanosphere deposition.(10) While CTAB alone is toxic to cells, CTAB-coated nanoparticles are nontoxic.(11) Electronic coupling between nanorod monolayers with microorganisms can open the possibility of novel hybrid devices utilizing the machinery of the biological system.<br />

The football passed into his son&#8217;s hands and the actual photo he took was one of a cheerleader&#8217;s pom-pom. Bob missed the touchdown too. He resisted an insane urge to slam the camera to the ground and jump on it.&#13;</p>
<p>This was his first digital camera, and Bob had just experienced an unpleasant surprise. He had used film cameras all his life, but when his Yashica went into the shop a friend loaned him a digital camera. He naively decided to take some action shots and discovered the most maddening &#8220;feature&#8221; of digital cameras &#8211; the shutter delay.&#13;</p>
<p>MADDENING AND FRUSTRATING&#13;</p>
<p>Articles on this subject have attributed shutter delay to:&#13;</p>
<p>1. The camera&#8217;s focus system&#13;</p>
<p>2. The time it takes the camera to digitally process the image&#13;</p>
<p>3. Reaction time of the photographer&#13;</p>
<p>Numbers one and three are lag times that most people using digital cameras are accustomed to. Most have used a film camera and know it needs a few milliseconds to focus.&#13;</p>
<p>The no-brainer solution is to reduce the aperture of the lens to increase depth of field, or aim the camera at the object you wish to be in focus and depress the shutter button half way in order to &#8220;tell&#8221; the camera what to focus on, then move the camera to center the image and depress it the rest of the way.&#13;</p>
<p>As far as human reaction time, well, it hasn&#8217;t really changed much for users of film cameras, and people experienced in taking action shots usually get what they want.&#13;</p>
<p>So let&#8217;s look at number 2, the time it takes to process the picture.&#13;</p>
<p>TIME TO DO THE PROCESSING&#13;</p>
<p>Processing the picture (so the camera can be ready for the next one) comes in several steps to move it from the image sensor to flash card storage:&#13;</p>
<p>1. Color corrections. The camera has to examine each and every Charge Couple Device (CCD) element on the photo sensor. It adds green, blue, and red to achieve the right color balance. For a 3 mega pixel camera, the processor has to make 9 million calculations.&#13;</p>
<p>2. Sharpening. This boosts the contrast by detecting and sharpening edges.&#13;</p>
<p>3. Compression. This process converts the 12 to 14 bits of each CCD sensor to 16 bits by &#8220;padding&#8221; the information and compressing it to 8 bits. This compresses the file size to 9 megabytes.&#13;</p>
<p>These steps require a tremendous amount of computational time. No wonder Bob missed his shot!&#13;</p>
<p>CATCHING THE ACTION&#13;</p>
<p>There are two ways of capturing action:&#13;</p>
<p>1. The &#8220;consecutive mode&#8221;. If the camera has this mode, you can take a series of rapid shots moving through the event. This requires a camera with a large ‘buffer&#8221; to hold photos for processing.&#13;</p>
<p>2. Anticipating shots by depressing and holding down the shutter release prior to the event. This requires an ability to predict the future, something most of us don&#8217;t possess.&#13;</p>
<p>THE FUTURE OF FASTER SHOOTING&#13;</p>
<p>Obviously this would all be simplified if micro processing were faster. Even with large buffers, the speed in which data is transmitted to the processor is prohibited by the rate at which data is conveyed from the CCD. Micro processing speed is the next bottleneck.&#13;</p>
<p>Faster clock rates and data transfer speeds would reduce or even eliminate &#8220;shutter lag&#8221; time. There are several technologies in the wings that offer hope:&#13;</p>
<p>1. Nanotube and nanowire technologies.  These are both the offspring of &#8220;nanotechnology&#8221;, the ability to make tiny machines at the &#8220;nano&#8221; level, a billionth of a meter in size rather than a millionth of a meter (micrometer) and offer hope for a 500 GHz clock rate or more.&#13;</p>
<p>2. DNA Yes, you heard me right. Computing based on DNA strands in which information is stored and processed.&#13;</p>
<p>3. Other materials&#13;</p>
<p>•  Gallium Arsenide with much a faster speed has been used for years for military purposes.&#13;</p>
<p>•  Silicon-Germanium chips increase the transfer of light signals to silicon. These traditionally have worked best at ultra cold temperatures, but many computer simulations have shown that they may be made to approach 1000 GHz (1 THz) at room temperature.&#13;</p>
<p>•  Indium-antimonide. Much faster than silicon&#13;</p>
<p>• Optical transistors. A glass material known as chalcogenide becomes a switch as its refracting properties are changed. No need to translate those photons into anything else.&#13;</p>
<p>•  Coated Viruses. The latest research involves coating viruses with a conducting material. Much higher speeds at the molecular level can be obtained. This will give a new meaning to the term &#8220;computer virus&#8221;.&#13;</p>
<p>4. Parallel Processing. As we&#8217;ve noticed lately with the war between Intel and AMD over the number of parallel processors crammed into a CPU, digital camera processing would benefit from parallel processors handling the focussing, sharpening and squeezing.&#13;</p>
<p>5. Improvement in instructional efficiency by reducing the lines of code would make the whole process more efficient.&#13;</p>
<p>HOLD ON AND WAIT FOR THE FUTURE&#13;</p>
<p>The REAL solution to this maddening shutter delay appears to be in the material the processor is constructed of, as well as advancements in the software.&#13;</p>
<p>But we&#8217;ve got awhile to wait for it. Although a few alternate materials have been around for awhile, everything else is still in the research and development phase. Even when it finally trickles out of the labs, it will probably make your future digital camera cost around $10000 – $15000.&#13;</p>
<p>Quite a price tag for the ability to take pictures as fast as a film camera! Still&#8230;&#13;</p>
<p>Except for the lag, the digital camera has it all over film cameras, once the photo is captured by the memory card. The new technology will be worth the wait.&#13;</p>
<p>Digital camera owners are known for their ability to wait&#8230;as they desperately punch the shutter release trying to grab the fleeting smile of their new baby, or the football that lands in his hands eighteen years later, when he scores the winning touchdown.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What are the most effective skincare products?  I’ll try to help you find them, but I always focus on safety first.</p>
<p>Cosmetic companies need to stop using hazardous compounds and cancer-causing chemicals.  But, as long as we continue to buy them, they won’t.  So, I’m trying to tell everyone about things to avoid.  Hopefully, that will eventually get them taken off the market.</p>
<p>Government regulating agencies are slow to react to new scientific research.  Retail department stores are sometimes quicker to take action.  But, when it comes to cosmetics, people tend not to worry about it.</p>
<p>For many years, it wasn’t a problem.  Most of the chemicals didn’t penetrate the epidermis, so other than causing superficial irritation, they could do little damage.</p>
<p>Today, the most effective skincare products are manufactured using nanotechnology.  They penetrate deeply, even entering the tissues and muscles.  If a company is going to use that kind of technology, the ingredients should be safe.</p>
<p>Here’s a short list of things to avoid.  They are either strongly suspected of or known to cause cancer.  Or, they inhibit the skin’s natural cell renewal process, thereby causing premature aging.</p>
<p>Petrolatum, mineral oils, paraffin wax, liquid paraffin, oxybenzone, triclosan, acrylamide, titanium dioxide, dioxins, artificial fragrances, parabens, DEA, MEA, TEA, nitrosamines, padimate-O and polyethylene glycol.  That is not a complete list, I’m sure, but it’s as much as I can include here.  </p>
<p>If you know anything about any of these ingredients, you will recognize that some of them are sunscreens.  Organic and synthetic sunscreens were rushed to the market without proper safety testing.  Now, years later, we learn that many of them cause cancer, which is what we were trying to prevent by using sunscreen in the first place.</p>
<p>The most effective skincare products for sunburn protection are also the safest.  Nearly every drug store carries a store brand of zinc oxide sun block, with a 30+ SPF rating.  That’s the most protection and the safest product that you can buy.</p>
<p>For moisturizing, petrolatum and mineral oils are widely used.  They are not, in fact, moisturizing.  They actually “repel” moisture and they interfere with the natural cell renewal process.</p>
<p>The most effective skincare products for moisturizing are those that contain grape seed oil and natural vitamin E.  Grape seed oils are very similar on a molecular level to the skin’s own sebum.  They are quickly absorbed and form a light film that prevents dirt particles from entering the pores.</p>
<p>Natural vitamin E is a strong antioxidant.  When combined with coenzyme Q10 and properly manufactured, it can penetrate deeply.  Even though the antioxidants are completely safe, they fade wrinkles and fine lines by undoing free radical damage.</p>
<p>Some compounds support the natural cell renewal process and speeds it up again, when age causes it to slow down.  Amino acids and proteins are the keys.  The skin cells need keratin, tryptophan, valine and other amino acids.</p>
<p>You won’t find the most effective skincare products being promoted by a celebrity.  The company has to pay her too much for her endorsement.  But, now, at least you have a better idea about safety and effectiveness.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Not everyone knows what causes wrinkles.  One of the long-standing theories is that habitual facial expressions are a cause.  There are some products on the market that attempt to improve your appearance by numbing the facial muscles, but the best anti wrinkle creams work in a different way.</p>
<p>They contain nourishing ingredients that support the skin’s ability to repair the damage that may have been done by time.  This damage is actually what causes wrinkles, lost firmness and the outward signs of old age.  The damage occurs on a molecular level, over time.  </p>
<p>Reactive oxygen species known as free radicals become active when exposed to UV rays from the sun, smoke or other pollutants.  In a youthful skin cell that is well nourished, there are enough antioxidant molecules to scavenge the radicals and prevent them from damaging the cellular membrane, the collagen fibers or the strands of DNA that are present in each cell.</p>
<p>In older skin, antioxidant levels are much lower.  So, some of the most important ingredients for skincare of all kinds are antioxidants.  The vitamins A and E are the most common ones.  The best anti wrinkle creams contain a specific form of &lt;b&gt;coenzyme Q10&lt;/b&gt; and vitamin E that can penetrate the skin’s cells.  </p>
<p>Most manufacturers use vitamins that are simply not small enough to penetrate the cellular membrane, so they are mostly ineffective.  Nanotechnology was required to create an emulsion that would penetrate through many of the skin’s layers, scavenging free radicals and repairing some of the damage that they have done.</p>
<p>The best anti wrinkle creams contain other ingredients as well, because the presence of free radicals, alone, is not what causes wrinkles and sagging.  We produce fewer new cells as we age.  Without new cells, new fibers cannot form to repair those that have been damaged.  </p>
<p>Older skin contains less hyaluronic acid, a compound that supports the skin’s strength and firmness.  As the level decreases, we start to see sagging and dark circles under our eyes.  </p>
<p>The best anti wrinkle creams contain ingredients that stimulate the production of new cells.  In clinical studies, the number of new cells increased by over 100% in many cases.  They also contain extracts from a specific kind of kelp called &lt;b&gt;Wakame&lt;/b&gt;.</p>
<p>Since lost hyaluronic acid is a part of what causes wrinkles and sagging, most companies try to supplement the levels by including the compound in their products.  The problem is this: there are enzymes that are naturally present in the skin that break down hyaluronic acid.  So, supplementation does not work that well.</p>

<p> SeamsPerfect is the universal primer that adheres any coating to virtually any substrate without the need for first grinding, or shot blasting the surface. </p>
<p>Based on proven European technologies, SeamsPerfect applies indoors and out, directly over cutback glue, tile, concrete, VCT, wood, linoleum and metal. Once applied, the substrate is ready to adhere to any acrylic, cement, epoxy coating or overlay system. The surfaces are primed and sealed at the same time.</p>
<p>SeamsPerfect Primer uses nanotechnology and molecular bonding to adhere the substrate to the coatings. This replaces the older physical adhesion model that has been used to date. The primer now makes it possible for hundreds of coatings from various manufacturers to be cleanly adhered to dozens of various substrates. This means that users can produce more work over more surfaces, in less time and at a lower selling price than ever before.</p>
